The Ground Is Written Into History

The New Market Battlefield Visitor Center is situated on Manor's Hill, adjacent to Historic Old River Road. Due to its elevation, the ground played a pivotal role during the second and third days of the Battle of New Market.

"The enemy advances."

— Union Major Timothy F. Lang

"Put the boys in—And may God forgive me for the order."

Exploring Manor's Hill, Old River Road & The Wharton Advance Trail

Fifteen marble and granite markers are positioned on the hallowed ground of Manor's Hill. Each marker features unique regimental information related to the action unfolding late morning and early afternoon of 15 May 1864, the third and final day of the battle.

Interpretive tables are also present on Manor's Hill and Old River Road. Additional tables are situated along the length of the Wharton Advance Trail, which exits at the Virginia Monument.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the battlefield grounds and Old River Road—Trek along the Wharton Advance Trail, which is approximately 1.2 miles round trip.

Our interpretive tables feature QR codes, providing you with additional details.
